Where Is God by Jo Murphy - May 17, 2020

"During this pandemic I am unable to go into
as many rooms, we are not allowed to hold hands, my mask is always
on, I pray into door cracks, I take pauses with nurses, and remember I
don’t actually have any more control than I did before the pandemic. I
have never been a doctor, I have never been able to heal, instead I try
every day to do what we did during the pastoral prayer. I try to fill
myself with all the suffering and breathe out beauty, wonder, and

The Rev. Ms. Johanna Murphy offered us this sermon originally planned for March 15, but with some changes to let us know about how Jo's work as a chaplain at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston during these past two months has affected her understanding of God and that of the patients and hospital staff for whom she cares. In addition to serving as a UU hospital chaplain, Jo also works with Chaplains on the Way, a program that does accompaniment work with people experiencing homelessness in Waltham, MA. Jo and Pam Barz first connected when Jo was the president of the UU Community at Wellesley College and Pam was serving as the UU Chaplain.
